The General Hospital Block

The General Hospital Complex is constituted into various departments such as General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics and appendant facilities for Biochemical, Bacteriological, Histopathological and Radiological investigations. It also houses a well stocked Pharmacy, Cafeteria and Dietary department. The casualty department located on the first floor is approached directly by a special ramp, designed and equipped to handle all types of emergencies, including road traffic accidents. Right at the entrance of the casualty there is a well-equipped resuscitation room which forms part of the operation theater annexe. The patients can be kept in an observation ward within the same location, if required. The second floor houses a complete suite of theaters consisting of three operating theaters and a labour room with all attendant facilities, inclusive of an intensive care unit. The third floor above would house beds for inpatients, both in the form of general wards and independent rooms. Apart from the Professor of General Medicine and Professor of General Surgery who with their team form part of the regular teaching staff of the college, there are visiting consultants in various specialties. A full time Resident Medical Officer coordinates the functioning of the General Hospital and is available 24 hours on campus. The medical team complements the staff of the Dental College to handle any kind of medically compromised patient who may seek dental care.

Consequent to the establishment of the casualty and the panel of the consultants, trauma care is given top priority considering the number of road traffic accidents prevalent on the National Highway, on which the college is located. The hospital will also be the meeting ground of the Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeon, Oncologist and Plastic Surgeon to develop an oral cancer center. As part of the student education, a drive has been launched in the form of a Community Health Education Programme to identify early oral cancer patients and to plan definitive cancer treatment. With this planning it is possible that highly comprehensive cancer health care will be delivered to the population residing in the rural areas around the college.
