Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial
Orthopaedics
Orthodontics involves correction of dental and
dentofacial deformities and the prevention of such problems. It also involves interceptive
treatment at an early age to minimise the severity of such problems or occasionally even
resolve them completely. Largely viewed as a postgraduate subject, the undergraduate
curriculum for dental students is limited to removable appliances and a basic
understanding of fixed appliances. The postgraduate course is a three year program which
enrolls seven students each year. The first year involves the study of basic medical
sciences and simultaneous involvement in the fabrication of removable appliances,
functional appliances and preliminary wire bending exercises before the students begin
work on clinical subjects. When the students embark on this clinical work, they are
allotted a variety of cases that include removable appliances, functional appliances and
predominantly, fixed appliance cases that include both the Beggs technique as well
as the Pre Adjusted Edgewise appliance. Some of these cases would be treated by a
combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. At the end of three years, the
students are expected to present a minimum of 5 completed cases as a practical fulfilment
for their MDS degree examination. Students also conduct a study and write a dissertation
on the same as part of the course.

Research work undertaken by the department
- Comparative study of plaque accumulation in Begg and PEA cases
- Prevalence of Hepatitis B in Orthodontic patients
- Pain control by interferential therapy
- Comparison of dry heat sterilizers used for orthodontics
- Soft tissue changes after anterior maxillary osteotomy
- Finite element stress analysis of ceramic brackets
- Epidemiological study of malocclusion in school going children between the ages
of 6-12 years
Community Programs
As part of the community oral health programs
of the institution, over 2000 students in Bhakthavatsalam Vidyashram, Korattur were
examined for the incidence of orthodontic problems and suitable treatment was rendered.
Head of the department

Department of Conservative
Dentistry and Endodontics
Conservative Dentistry includes endodontics and
operative procedures for the restoration of teeth. The department provides all services
for adult patients over the age of twelve years and has a strong teaching and clinical
record. The Department has enthusiastic clinicians who are interested in the latest
techniques for Operative& Endodontic treatment and are active in practical Restorative
Dentistry and Endodontics in the hospital setting, as well as in private practice and can
demonstrate as well as describe what they are practicing and teaching. The under graduate
students are taught the science behind the cause of dental diseases that require
restorative treatment. They are taught the science of various materials used in the
restoration of teeth and given practice sessions in the handling of them during their
first year of undergraduate study and are given exercises in simple restorative procedures
and endodontics in phantom head during their second year of curriculum. All undergraduate
students from their third year start rendering treatment to the patients with constant
guidance of the staff. Postgraduate study is directed mainly towards clinical
problems that are beyond the scope of general dental practice as well as techniques that
require additional training than imparted to undergraduate students. There is emphasis on
the restoration of appearance, occlusal form and function in complex cases where tooth
wear, partial edentulism, masticatory muscle dysfunction or previous dental treatment have
contributed to a challenging clinical situation.

Department of Oral Medicine, Radiology and
Diagnosis
Oral Medicine is a clinical
discipline in dentistry that encompasses the following
Diagnosis and Medical management of diseases of the oral mucosa,
jaws, teeth and salivary glands and oral manifestations of systemic diseases as well.
Diagnosis and medical
management of facial pain and temporomandibular joint disease
Dental treatment for patients
with complicated medical diseases
Over the past 25 years, Oral Medicine has emerged as a
specialty within dentistry and is rapidly gaining increasing importance, both nationally
and internationally. No one is better qualified than the dentist who is well trained in
Oral Medicine, to diagnose oral lesions and facial pain or to consult and interact on a
professional basis with appropriate medical practitioners, in their respective field of
expertise, in planning and carrying out dental treatment for the medically compromised
patient.
Like Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial radiology which forms part of the student
curriculum is unique in that only a dental surgeon can interpret the pathology involving
both the jaws, as most of the pathology involving the job bones are derived from tooth
related structures.
In view of the need for improved competence in the recognition of the above-mentioned
goal, this subject is taught to the undergraduate dental students at the pre-final, final
year and their internship.
STUDENT PROGRAM
The students in the pre-final
and final year are taught Oral Medicine theory along with Oral & MaxilloFacial
Radiology which forms part of the Oral Medicine when they appear for their University
examination at the end of fourth (final) academic year. During their clinical postings the
pre-final, final year and the interns are trained to record the case details in a
systematic manner so as to arrive at a proper diagnosis. They are encouraged to take
dental radiographs for the indicated ones and interpret them. Each student is required to
complete certain specified number of case records and interpretation of radiographs,
before they appear for the University examination. All the students attendance and
progress are recorded periodically and this forms the major part of their internal
assessment.
ORGANIZATION OF THE DEPARTMENT
Currently about 300 patients
visit the out patient clinic everyday for seeking remedy to various illness affecting the
oral and para-oral regions. After proper diagnosis and investigations they are treated /
advised accordingly to seek treatment in the specialty concerned. The Radiology department
caters the needs of all the various dental specialties. Apart from the routine dental
radiograph and full body radiographs, Lateral Cephalogram and Ortho Pantogram are also
taken by using latest radiographic equipment.

Department of Pedodontics and Preventive
Dentistry
Paedodontics deals with the ,mangement of dental
diseases in children and is the only dental department where the age is the criterion for
the patient rather than the dental problem he is suffering from. The department treats a
variety of children, varying from neonates to adolescents upto the age of 12. It is a
specialty which encompassess various facets of other dental specialties, while at the same
time adapting them to suit the treatment needs of children. Various procedures for the
treatment of the deciduous dentition are performed in addition to the adoption of several
modern preventive dentistry techniques to offset dental disease in the young.
Dr.V.Ratnaprabhu, MDS
Assistant Professor
Dr.V.Ratnaprabhu cpmpleted his BDS from
Annamali University in 1991 and went on to specialise in Pedodontics and Preventive

Department
of Periodontia and Community Dentistry
Periodontia includes largely the
maintenance of health of the tissues surrounding the teeth. This may
involve regular cleaning of teeth to debride them of substances that accumulate on them or
it may involve
a restoration of the health of the surrounding tissues once they are damaged by disease.
This department
specialises therefore, not only, in oral prophylaxis, but also in several procedures that
are aimed at restoration of damaged gums, bone and other parts of tissue that surround
teeth. The department also includes. community dentistry which aims at interacting with
the community to promote awareness about dental health, conduct surveys for collecting
epidemiological data and prevent dental disease. The undergraduate students are taught to
use various periodontal instruments in order to carry out regular periodontal work as
outlined below, which is useful in everyday general dental practice. Interns are given
training in some specialised work as well in order to help them to integrate a little
specialised periodontics
with their dental practice.
Nature of regular work carried out in the department
Oral
prophylaxis including scaling and polishing, dental health screening, oral health surveys.
Nature of specialised
work carried out in the department
Curettage,
Gingivectomies, Gingivoplasty, Periodontal flap surgery of various types, Mucogingival
surgery (Vestibuloplasty, Soft tissue regenerative procedures including various free
grafts, repositioned flaps), Hard tissue regenerative procedures(bone grafting/guided
tissue regeneration)
Research
Several clinical studies
are regularly conducted in the department and in addition regular oral health surveys are
conducted to harvest epidemiological data. Currently, a clinical study on the treatment of
gingival recession with combined orthodontic/periodontic treatment is underway.
Community Dentistry
Several oral health surveys have been conducted in
surrounding villages in the proximity of the institution. With a thrust on dental
education, over 15 villages with a population of over I lakh, have been covered. In
collaboration with the Indian Dental Association and the WHO, several school dental health
programs have also been conducted, under which several thousand children have been
screened for signs of early dental disease. An oral cancer program is currently being
planned wherein extensive screening for oral cancer is to be carried out and the
preliminary work for the same has already been completed. In collaboration with the Indian
Society for Dental Research (ISDR), a symposium on the ART (Atraumatic Restorative
Technique) is to be organised in the year 1999.
Special activities
The XXIII National
conference of the Indian Society of Periodontology was hosted by the department in January
1999. This conference is the annual activity of the Indian Society of Periodontology which
is a national conglomeration of periodontists from all over the country. The conference
saw several distinguished foreign speakers from India and abroad, visiting Saveetha Dental
College , for lectures and preconference hands on courses.
Head of the department
Dr.N.D.Jayakumar,
Professor
Department of Periodontics & Community Dentistry
Dr.N.D.Jayakumar
completed his BDS from the Madras University in 1984 and graduated from the Madras
Dental College. Soon after he rejoined the same institution and completed his MDS in
Periodontics, graduating in 1989. His interest in teaching and academics saw him join the
Saveetha Dental College and
Hospital immediately after his MDS. He has been with the institution almost since its
inception and has been actively involved in teaching both Periodontics and Community
Dentistry.
